Introduction

I was blogging back in 2018 but caring and other responsibilities took priority.

I'm in my early sixties, male, and am a carer for Viv, who is of a similar age.  She has had numerous encounters with the NHS, being epileptic, and having a Vestibular Schwannoma .

You'll hear much about our experiences in due course.

It's January 2021 . We've been in lockdown, on and off, for twelve months.  The government seems to believe that there is a great consensus among the public that lockdown is a good idea; Viv and I disagree both that it is, and that there is a consensus. Casual conversations we have had over the last few months lead us to believe that a fair proportion of the population is 'sceptic', but are scared to voice their opinions openly.  The problem is that the government gets its message across, and media - both national and social - fall over themselves to enthuse about it. Do you remember the NHS IT Programme? Twenty or so years ago it was one of the flagships of the Blair era: a single, modern, IT system for the whole NHS. But it never really happened, or rather, wasn’t allowed to happen. I remember it well, I was part of the programme’s delivery team for four years. *** The plans sounded fine: the NHS should work like a bank, or a motor car business, or indeed almost any other industry in the modern world, which all have ONE set of records for its customers. Years ago, you could walk into a bank in a town and cash a cheque without them knowing whether you had enough money in your account - you needed a cheque guarantee card (remember them?). In the 1990s all of the banks moved to having a single set of records for all customers, and now, whichever branch of your bank you walk into they will know everything about your accounts from the one set of records. A letter to the Radio Times

Viv and I have a subscription to The Radio Times: we like to know what's on TV. There’s so much rubbish on that we don’t like to miss the one or two good programs, like Secrets of the London Underground or reruns of Ever Decreasing Circles .   But like much of the mainstream media it has got caught up in peddling liberal ideas. The 21-27 May issue landed on our doormat on Tuesday, I flicked through it and as soon as I saw the article on page 9 my blood pressure shot up: ‘ Enough Tudors and Stuarts ’, I read, ‘by Troy Deeney’ . ‘Let's  teach all our children about black history’,  it starts. Troy is a career footballer, I believe. I’ve sent off an email to the Feedback pages of RT: Hi Troy Deeney (RT, 21-27 May)  has missed the point about the study of history in schools.
